Description

Collection related to the United Nations Transitional Authority in Cambodia (UNTAC) service of 234417 Captain Lewis Ritchie 'Lew' MacLeod, Force Communications Unit (FCU), Phnom Penh, 1993.

Wallet 1 of 1 - Consists of two letters and an article written by MacLeod during his deployment to Cambodia from April to October 1993. The two letters, written to MacLeod's parents and dated 6 June and 10 August 1993, discuss the culture shock on arrival, his settling in, the security and defensive preparations at the Australian camp, the Cambodian general election, his work at the Regimental Aid Post nursing patients with tropical infections, the heat and humidity, his cravings for fresh milk and McDonald's, the tense political environment in Phnom Penh, his period of leave in Thailand, and tensions between the FCU and local police following a shooting incident. The article, written by MacLeod shortly after his arrival in Cambodia, discusses his pre-embarkation training and nursing work with UNTAC, and reflects on the difficulties and rewards of an operational deployment.
