Description

Studio portrait of Lieutenant (Lt) John Chute Ellis, A Battery, 106th Brigade Royal Field Artillery, British Army. Lt Ellis was born in South Australia and educated in Australia and New Zealand. He studied medicine at Otago University, NZ, and gained further degrees whilst attending London Hospital from 1908 to 1910. He returned to Australia in 1911 where he became a managing partner of Burrabogie Station, Hay, NSW. In 1915 he returned to England where he offered his services to the London Hospital, and when he was unable to obtain a position, joined the Royal Artillery. On 6 June 1917 Lt Ellis died of wounds received at Messines. He was aged 30.
