Exterior view of the Kitchener Hospital. The hospital was established to treat wounded soldiers during the First World War, taking over the building of the former Brighton Workhouse. 4740 Private (Pte) William Robertson Long, 27th Battalion, was wounded in action on 11 March 1917 near Bapaume, France, and was evacuated England where he was treated in the Kitchener Hospital. As a result of his injury Pte Long's left arm was amputated and he was returned to Australia for discharge in Adelaide on 6 May 1918.
