Studio portrait of 40059 Officer Cadet Robert James (Rob) Reed RAAF, taken while training with the RAF in England. Later graduating to the rank of Flight Lieutenant (Flt Lt), Reed joined No. 50 Squadron RAF, a bomber squadron that was flying Handley Page Hampdens at the outbreak of the Second World War. Flt Lt Reed was killed in action during air operations against German land targets on 10 September 1940, aged 26. The crash site was later discovered in Belgium, and his remains interred at Oostende New Communal Cemetery, Belgium.
