Studio portrait of 5839 Private (Pte) Harry Hewish, 10th Battalion, of Payneham, SA. An electrician before enlisting in April 1916, Pte Hewish left Australia for England with the 18th Reinforcements in June 1916. Arriving in France for service on the Western Front, Pte Hewish was transferred to the 48th Battalion in October 1916. He was wounded in the arm during the 4th Division's attack at Bullecourt on 11 April 1917 and was repatriated to England to recover, rejoining his unit in France in August 1917. Pte Hewish was killed by German artillery fire during the 4th Division's attack on Passchendaele Ridge on 12 October 1917, aged 23. He has no known grave.
