Description

Studio portrait of Captain Eric Arthur Collins, 12th Field Artillery Brigade (FAB), of Toorak, Victoria. Collins had served for six years in the 25th Battery, Australian Field Artillery (AFA) prior to joining the AIF as a Sergeant on 8 May 1915. He was appointed 2nd Lieutenant with the 2nd FAB in July 1915, departed Melbourne aboard HMAT Ballarat (A70) on 9 September 1915. In December 1915 he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant. In early 1916 Lt Collins was taken on strength with the 12th FAB, however soon after he was transferred for a six month period to the 24th FAB, before rejoining the 12th FAB in early 1917. On 21 January 1917 he was promoted to Captain. Captain Collins was wounded in action on 4 May 1917 at the Second Battle of Bullecourt, and died the same day at the 3rd Casualty Clearing Station. He was buried at Grevillers British Cemetery near Baupaume.
