Description
Studio portrait of 413837 Sergeant (later Warrant Officer (WO)) Lionel Dellit, 20 Squadron RAAF, of Kirribilli, NSW. WO Dellit enlisted in Sydney on 13 September 1941. He was lost on operations on 21 May, 1944. He was the wireless operator and air gunner of a Catalina aircraft, serial number A24-73. It was engaged in mine-dropping operations off Soerabaya (Surabaya), Java, when it received damage to both fuel tanks and was forced to attempt an emergency landing off the north-east coast of Bali. No trace of the crew was subsequently found and they are presumed to have been killed in action on this date. WO Dellit's brothers, 403260 Arthur Adrian Dellit and Edward Dellit, also served in the RAAF.
