Informal group portrait of members of 2/3 Machine Gun Battalion outside a tent at Hill 95 camp. Back row, left to right: TX3136 Private (Pte) Lorrimer (Lorrie) Anzac Von Stieglitz; and SX9867 Pte Lawrence (Laurie) Arthur Graetz. Second row: TX2214 Pte James Henry Robert Smith; TX3125 Pte John (Jackie) Charles Leaman; and SX9611 Pte William (Bill) John Haniford. Front Row: TX3653 Cpl Clarence (Clarrie) Edwin McCulloch. Pte Graetz was discharged from the army on 29 January 1943. The other five soldiers became prisoners of war of the Japanese in Java in 1942 and worked on the Thai Burma Railway. Cpl Smith died of cholera in the Hintok Mountain camp, Thailand on 19 July 1943, aged 34. Pte Stieglitz, Pte Leaman, Cpl McCulloch and Pte Haniford survived imprisonment and returned to Australia. On 3 October 1946 Pte Haniford died of self inflicted wounds, aged 29.
