Studio portrait of eight servicemen prior to embarkation. Identified are 4380 Private (Pte) Herbert Jacob Beil (fourth from left) and his brother 4379 Pte Marmaduke Beil (far right), 25th Battalion, of Warwick, Qld. The other servicemen and their units are unidentified, however the servicemen on the far left is wearing the number of the 5th Light Horse on the shoulder of his uniform. The soldier 6th from the left is wearing the number of the 25th Battalion on his shoulder. Labourers prior to enlistment, Privates Herbert and Marmaduke Beil embarked with the 11th Reinforcements from Sydney on HMAT Star of Victoria on 31 March 1916. On 4 October 1917 Pte Marmaduke Beil was killed in action at Ypres, Belgium, aged 32. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium. After twice being wounded in action, Pte Herbert Beil transferred to the 9th Battalion and returned to Australia on 20 May 1919.
