Description

Sergeant (Sgt) 436 James Aloysious Connellan, 1st Battalion of Sydney, NSW, examines fruit offered by a local merchant. Sgt Connellan enlisted on 21 August 1914 and embarked from Australia aboard HMAT Afric on 18 October 1914. Months after this photograph was taken, he suffered gun-shot wounds to the thigh at the Gallipoli landings on 25 April 1915. Following convalesence at No. 1 Australian General Hospital in Heliopolis, he returned to duties with the 1st Battalion. He was wounded again in France in July 1916, suffering gun shot wounds to the left hand, and again in May 1918. He was awarded the Military Medal (MM) for services in 1917. Quarter Master Sergeant Connellan MM was wounded again in May 1918 and was invalided back to Australia in November for futher hospital treatment.
