Studio portrait of 2944 Private (Pte) William Harold (Billy) Mundy, 48th Battalion, of Boulder City, WA. A farmer prior to enlistment, he embarked with the aboard HMAT Argyllshire from Fremantle on 9 November 1916. Proceeding to France in June 1917, he suffered a gunshot wound to the chest in November and was admitted to Edmonton Military Hospital in England. Rejoining his unit in France in March 1918, Pte Mundy was killed in action on 5 April 1918, aged 20. He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Villers Bretonneux Memorial, France. Pte Mundy was one of three brothers who served in the First World War. 3204 Private (Pte) Reginald James Mundy, 28th Battalion, was killed in action in France on 29 July 1916, aged 20. 841 Pte Edward Murray (Ted) Mundy, 12th Battalion, survived the war and returned to Australia in March 1919.
