Studio portrait of 2329 Private (Pte) Gustav Arnold Liersch, 39th Battalion, of Warracknabeal, Victoria. A farmer prior to enlistment on 18 July 1916, Pte Liersch embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Port Lincoln (A17) on 20 October 1916. He was killed in action on 4 June 1917 and buried at Trois-Arbres Cemetery Steenwerck. His younger brother, 7275 Pte Adolf Henry Liersch also served and returned to Australia in 1919.
