Pre-enlistment studio portrait of 735 Private (Pte) George Johnson, 20th Battalion, of Sydney, NSW. A NSW state public servant prior to enlisting on 17 April 1915, Pte Johnson embarked on board HMAT Berrima (A35) on 26 June 1915. After training in Egypt they landed at Anzac Cove on 22 August 1915. From then until the battalion's departure in December 1915 the 20th Battalion defended Russell's Top, a position on Walker's Ridge which stretched north west of Anzac Cove. Pte Johnson, aged 27, was killed in action on 16 December 1915.
