Description

Scrapbook leaf with a reconnaissance sketch on graph paper and extended inscription, which reads: "A Reconnaissance sketch showing the Southern portion of the Peninsular - This was done for the purpose of showing the zone of fire of The Beach Gun, an eighteen pounder in position near Brighton Beach. It was later termed the 'Brighton Battery'. In the extreme distance are Hill 600, Achi Baba, Krithia] Ridge and Cape Helles. The trees beneath suggested [sketched outline of a tree line] are the famous olive groves in which 'Beachy Bill' was emplaced. It was somewhere his position marked on the sketch "Supposed 4.5 gun 4600 yds" / ([illeg.] Naval Obs. Stn). In the middle distance are Holly Ridge, Poppy Valley, and Gaba Tepe'
