Cairo - a Belle
Sketchbook containing 56 pages of drawings from his service during the First World War
- Scrapbook leaf with three sketches and inscriptions; verso: ink sketch
Description
Watercolour on a leaf torn from a small sketchpad, depicting an Egyptian woman wearing full black chador. Interestingly, she wears a bangle on her left foot and no shoes. She holds a small child aloft on her left shoulder, supported only by her left hand. The child wears a red cloth and reaches out toward her face. The artist has titled the sketch 'Cairo: a belle'. Underneath, inscribed on the scrapbook leaf, is 'Native Woman'.
