Not titled [A member of the Zion Mule Corps]
Description
Sketch on a leaf torn from a small sketchpad, depicting a member of the Zion Mule Corps in full uniform standing in front of two donkeys, one of which is loaded up with transport crates. Benson indicates that "700 Jews joined early in the affair and are carrying munitions and water per 'donk' ".
The Zion Mule Corps was formed in 1914-1915 during World War I and comprised of Jewish volunteers almost entirely from Britain, Russia, the United States and Canada. They served on the Gallipoli front, landing with the British, Australian, New Zealand and French troops on 25 April, 1915.
