Not titled [Water well guard]; verso: Towards Suvla Bay

recto: Water well guard at Victoria Gully, Gallipoli. Inscription on scrapbook leaf reads: "At the foot of Victoria Gully was a Turkish well which only yielded a small supply of water. A guard was placed over it so that the diggers should not get more than one issue"; verso: Suvla Bay. Inscription on facing page is likely to correspond to this sketch: "Double page sketch shows Cape Nebrunesi and the white line between the hills is the salt lake. In the foreground are Shrapnel Green and Victoria Gully, and over the ridge is White's Gully. The clearing on the right was a small cotton field and in the bushes just above it was a gun of the 9th Battalion under it. Glend[illeg.] who was killed at Ypres in July '17. In this cotton patch fell most of the darts dropt from a Turkish or German flare. They were made of iron, about a foot long, round and sharpened at the end and the centre flattened and twisted: - This was the only time I saw them used. And tho there were a lot of us about, they did not get anybody. On the left of the patch a 6in Naval gun was in front which fired on targets toward the Krithia Ridge."
