- Scrapbook leaf with three sketches and inscriptions; verso: extended inscription
Description
Sketch on a leaf torn from a small sketchpad, depicting a head study of a member of the 5th Scottish Howitzer Battery, who arrived at Anzac Cove June 26th. Benson's account reads: "The 5th Scottish Howitzer Battery [illeg.] arrived June 26 and the guns were placed in position on a gentle slope beneath the 3rd BOC Artillery HQs. They were principally engaged on targets about Lone Pine. The Guns (4.55) were very ancient and had been used in South Africa but a great deal of shooting was done at Anzac - the crews seemed to be in action all day long."
