Queen Victoria in Her Coronation Robes
Description
This statuette is a sensitively and realistically rendered portrait of Queen Victoria. Although dressed in her Coronation Robes, the piece was created to celebrate her Diamond Jubilee, being 60 years since her Coronation. On the architectural base of the statuette are four panels with allegorical figures alluding to the expanse of the British Empire, including India (a female warrior with sword, helmet and shield), Canada (a female harvestor with wheat sheath and scythe), Africa (a female holding a spade and nugget of gold) and Australia (a shepherdess with crook and cornucopia). This statuette demonstrates the link between Australia, the British Empire and rule and popularity of Queen Victoria during the nineteenth century.
