Studio portrait of VX20712 Private (Pte) Alan Richard Kelso, 2/21 Battalion, of Brunswick, Vic. A press operator prior to the war, Kelso enlisted on 14 June 1940. Departing from Darwin in May 1942, the battalion was sent to the island of Ambon to reinforce Dutch troops in the event of a Japanese attack. Following the Japanese invasion on the night of 30 January 1942, Pte Kelso was among the Australian troops that were taken prisoner of war (POW). On 31 May 1945, Pte Kelso died of illness whilst a POW in Ambon, aged 26. Pte Kelso was one of three brothers that enlisted for service in the Second World War. NX122491 Gunner (Gnr) Stanley Alex Charles Kelso, 2/5 Field Regiment; and VX115212 Gnr Leslie James Kelso, 2/3 Field Regiment, survived the war and were discharged in Australia in 1946.
