History / Summary

Fundraising badge produced in 1916 to promote the fundraising activities of the Victorian Education Department Patriotic Fund. Such badges were sold in trams, buses, at railways stations and at rallies to raise money for the stated cause. This example appears to be a tribute to the French and may have been inspired by the stories of the fierce fighting ocurring at Verdun in 1916. The Victorian Education Department Patriotic Fund raised a total of 390,337 pounds for the war effort.
