Informal outdoor portrait of 44 Private (Pte) Frank Noel McGowen, 1st Australian Light Horse Field Ambulance, AAMC, wearing a fez and posing in front of a tent. A student at Hawkesbury Agricultural College, Richmond, NSW, he enlisted in a group of about 20 from the college. He embarked on HMAT Southern (A27) on 23 September 1914. He was wounded on the Gallipoli peninsula, evacuated to Alexandria but died of these wounds on 24 August 1915, aged 20. Pte McGowen was the youngest son of the first labor Premier of NSW James Sinclair Taylor McGowen, 1910-1913.
