Studio portrait of VX22135 Private (Pte) Percival James Wood, 2/2 Pioneer Battalion, and his wife, Ethel Wood. Pte Wood enlisted on 5 June 1940 in Caulfield, Victoria. He was one of the 865 officers and men of 2/2 Pioneer Battalion captured in Java by the Japanese forces on 9 March 1942. Pte Wood was held in a prisoner of war (POW) camp in Thailand. He survived the war and was discharged from the Australian Army on 11 December 1945. During his time as a POW, Pte Wood carried this photograph in a leather wallet autographed by "Weary" Dunlop. On the reverse of this photograph is a handwritten list of names, of fellow POWs, under the heading, "P.O.W. 1942. Landsopvoedingsgesticht". The signatures are listed under the words "Sgts. Room" and include those of Australian, English and Welsh POWs.
