Description

Studio portrait of 6942A Private (Pte) Ernest Francis Sheargold who enlisted in the AIF on 7 February 1917. Pte Sheargold embarked at Port Melbourne on HMAT Ascanius (A11) with the 11th Reinforcements to the 24th Battalion bound for Devonport. After training in England Pte Sheargold proceed to France on 6 March 1918 as a reinforcement for the 22nd Battalion. On the 25th May 1918 Pte Sheargold was wounded in action and subsequently died of his wounds on 3 June 1918. The photograph has the following inscription written by Pte Sheargold: "Dear Miss Patterson Thank you very much for balaclava & good wishes Yours truly Prvt Ernest Sheargold No 6942.". This postcard was sent by Pte Sheargold to Miss Patterson thanking her for the gift; it was common for the women who made gifts for soldiers to include a note saying who made the gift.
