Informal portrait of NX113874 Sergeant (Sgt) William Frederick George Parks 2/4 Armoured Regiment, of Cowra, NSW. He was a shop assistant prior to enlisting on 27 July 1942. The 2/4 Armoured Regiment was formed in November 1942 and stationed in Queensland. In August 1944 it was sent to New Guinea and in December, it was sent to Bougainville. In June 1945 it served in the south sector of Bougainville; its tanks supporting the advance of the 3rd Division toward the Japanese base at Buin. Sgt Parks died of injuries at Bougainville on 16 August 1945. He was 24 years of age. The original image is hand coloured and his medal ribbons have been painted onto his uniform.
