Studio portrait of 7354 Private (Pte) Ernest Milton Martin, 2nd Casualty Clearing Station, of Armadale, Vic. He was an insurance clerk prior to enlisting in July 1915. Pte Martin embarked on board HMAT Bulla (A45) on 25 November 1915. He served in France from April 1916 until March 1917 when he began officer training first in France and then at Cambridge, England. He was appointed to the rank of 2nd Lieutenant in August 1917 and returned to the front. In December 1917 he was promoted to Lieutenant (Lt). Lt Martin was killed in action by shell fire at Mont St Quentin, France, on 31 August 1918. He was 25 years of age.
