Studio portrait of 1360 Private (Pte) George Silvester Goward 4th Battalion, of Eden, NSW. Pte Goward was a policeman prior to enlisting in November 1914. He embarked on board HMAT Seang Bee (A48) on 11 February 1915. As part of the 4th Battalion Pte Goward arrived at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915 and served there until the evacuation in December. In January 1916 he was transferred to the 1st Infantry Brigade and arrived in France in August. In Belgium in September, he was appointed to the Divisional Military Police attached to the 1st Infantry Brigade, with the rank of Lance Corporal and the new regimental number, 31A. On 29 September 1916 he was transferred to the 1st Pioneer Battalion and promoted to Corporal. On 8 September 1917 Cpl Goward was killed in action by a shell explosion while he and others were engaged in road construction on the Menin Road, near Ypres, Belgium. He was 24 years of age.
