Studio portrait of 2613 Private (Pte) Frank Cross 17th Battalion, of Surry Hills, NSW. A horseman prior to enlisting in August 1915, Pte Cross embarked from Sydney on board HMAT Euripides (A14) on 2 November 1915. The battalion arrived in Egypt in February 1916 and Pte Cross was transferred to the 55th Battalion. The following month he was transferred to the newly formed 5th Pioneer Battalion. He was promoted to Corporal (Cpl) soon after and then, for a short time, Lance Sergeant. Cpl Cross arrived in France in June 1916 and was killed in action on the Somme, France, on 25 October 1916. He was 24 years of age.
