Description

Studio portrait of 283 Private (Pte) Bertie Alfred Evans 43rd Battalion, of Fullarton, SA. A tram conductor prior to enlisting in January 1916, Pte Evans embarked from Adelaide on Board HMAT Afric (A19) on 9 June 1916. In England in September 1916 he was transferred briefly to the 16th Battalion. Pte Evans, however, left for France with the 43rd Battalion in November 1916. Throughout 1917 the 43rd Battalion fought in Flanders and took part in the battles of Messines and Ypres. On 27 December 1917, Pte Evans died of wounds received the previous day at Bois Grenier, France. He was 27 years of age. 283 Pte Bertie Alfred Evans was the uncle of SX4626 Lieutenant Bert Alfred Evans, 9 Australian Advanced Workshop (enlisted June 1940; discharged February 1946).
