Description

Studio portrait of Lieutenant (Lt) Guiseppe Luigi Valle. A suitcase originally belonging to Lt Valle was collected in North Africa by SX10258 Captain James Downing Potter, who served with B Company 2/48 Battalion. Lt Valle served first in the Alpini (mountain infantry) but was detached to the mountain artillery. He was posted to North Africa in 1940, to an anti-aircraft and anti-tank artillery unit attached to the 10th and 7th Bersaglieri Rifle Regiments, and served at Benghazi, Cyrene, Derna, Tobruk, Bardia, Mersa Matruh and Fuka. Valle was captured during the First Battle of El Alamein, on 10 July 1942, and was held at British prisoner of war camps in Egypt and then in India until the end of the war. See REL37796.
