Description
A crowd of Australian soldiers, many holding their kit bags, standing beside rail cars at Durban port en route to Australia in 1919. From 1916, it became necessary for transports of Australian soldiers to travel around the Cape of Good Hope rather than through the Suez Canal due to the risk from submarine attacks in the Mediterranean. Durban became an important stopping point in the voyage as the journey to and from Australia took up to eight weeks.
