Portrait of 413614 Pilot Officer (PO) Garth Stewart Hughes, DFC, RAAF, 514 Squadron, RAF, of Turramurra, NSW. Formerly a student at Sydney University, PO Hughes enlisted at Sydney on 12 September 1941 and after completing his flying training he was posted to 514 Squadron, RAF, flying Avro Lancasters. On 24 December 1943 he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. On the night of 30/31 March 1944 he was killed on operations over Nuremberg, Germany. This particular raid incurred heavy losses with 66 aircraft lost out of a total of 572 participating.
