Studio portrait of 3162 Private (Pte) Shrewsbury Frederick Kingsford, 23rd Battalion, of Melbourne, Vic, formerly of Christchurch, New Zealand; wearing a uniform with corporal's stripes. He was a clerk at the State Savings Bank in Melbourne prior to enlisting in July 1915. Pte Kingsford embarked with the 7th Reinforcements from Melbourne on board HMAT Commonwealth (A73) on 26 November 1915. He was transferred to the 58th Battalion in Egypt during February 1916 and to the 60th Battalion the following month. The 60th Battalion arrived in France on 29 June 1916 and suffered enormous casualties at the Battle of Fromelles which began on 19 July 1916. Pte Kingsford was one of many reported missing in action on that day. It was later confirmed that he had been killed in action. He was 24 years of age.
