Collection relating to 12688 Chief Petty Officer (CPO) Donald Mathieson Viney, HMAS Perth, Royal Australian Navy (RAN). CPO Viney was killed in action when the HMAS Perth was sunk in the Sunda Strait on 1 March 1942. Much of the correspondence is between CPO Viney (Don) and his wife, Mignon Martha Florence Viney. The collection contains: Telegram informing CPO Viney Missing In Action, dated 13 March 1942; letters mainly from Mignon's father Hertbert (Sam) Harrison to Mignon; letters from CPO Viney's nephew, Neil French; letters - Don to his mother Mary Mathieson Viney (nee Briggs) & his brother Kenneth McIntyre Viney; letters following Don being missing in action; condolences to Mignon following Don's M.I.A; Mignon's last letter to Don, still in the writing pad; letters Don - Mignon 1940-1942; returned unopened letters from Mignon to Don during Mediterranean service & from HMAS Perth's last voyage; certificates, references, notebook and wallet belonging to CPO Viney; Don Viney early letters to his mother Mary and his early Naval Service Record Book.
