Informal portrait of Captain (Capt) Roger Forrest Hughes, 1st Field Ambulance Australian Army Medical Corps, of Double Bay, NSW. Capt Hughes graduated BA MB ChM from the University of Sydney and worked as a medical practitioner at Sydney's St Vincent's Hospital for a few months before enlisting in March 1916. He embarked from Brisbane on board HMAT Seang Choon (A49) on 19 September 1916. Capt Hughes arrived in France on 4 December 1916 and was wounded in action by shell fire in Bull Trench near Guedecourt, Somme on the morning of 11 December 1916. His brother Flight Lieutenant Geoffrey Forrest Hughes No. 10 Squadron, Royal Flying Corps, was with him when he died later that day. He was 26 years of age. Captain Hughes was the son of The Hon Sir Thomas Hughes MLC and Lady Hughes.
