Composite portrait of 3580 Private (Pte) Sydney Joseph Johnston (left), of Bundaberg, Qld, and 3642 Pte Harold Newham Tompkins, of Charleville, Qld, both of the 31st Battalion. Pte Johnston was a station overseer and Pte Tompkins a photographer prior to enlistment. They embarked with the 8th Reinforcements from Brisbane on HMAT Boorara on 16 August 1916. Pte Tompkins was killed in action on 26 September 1917 at Polygon Wood, aged 25. Pte Johnston was allocated a new service number, 3580A, and was promoted to Corporal (Cpl). He was killed in action on 29 September 1917, also at Polygon Wood. He was aged 21. Cpl Johnston and Pte Tompkins have no known graves and are commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
