Description

Studio portrait of 4212 Private (Pte) James Robert Gow, 1st Battalion, of Mortdale, NSW. An ironmoulder, then a porter for the NSW Government Railways prior to enlisting, he embarked with the 13th Reinforcements on board HMAT Aeneas (A60) on 20 December 1915. The battalion reached Egypt in February 1916 and Pte Gow was transferred to the 54th Battalion. They arrived in France in July. Pte Gow was hospitalised with serious illnesses several times between July 1916 and February 1917; the last time with frost bite. Pte Gow was killed in action at Bullecourt, France, early in the morning on 15 May 1917. His unit was preparing to advance when a German shell exploded near their trench. Pte Gow and perhaps nine others were buried when the bank collapsed. They were quickly dug out but several men including Pte Gow were dead. He was 22 years of age.
