Studio portrait of John Henry Jackson. John Jackson was born in Manchester, England, in 1858. Following emigration to Australia, Jackson married Emily Easson at St Leonards, NSW in 1883. He embarked from Sydney aboard SS Salamis on 8 August 1900 as an Able Seaman with the NSW Naval Contingent. He returned to Australia on 25 April 1901 aboard SS Chingtu. Jackson was working as a storeman when he enlisted in the Commonwealth Contingent for South Africa in Sydney on 20 January 1902. Trooper Jackson served in South Africa with the 1st Australian Commonwealth Horse, seeing action in Transvaal and the Cape Colony. The father of nine children, John Henry Jackson died in 1928.
