Cpl Clark enlisted on 29 March 1941 and initially served in the Middle East with the Australian Army Pay Corps, 8th Division. Later in 1941 the division was deployed to different parts of the Asia-Pacific region. Most members of the division, including Cpl Clark became prisoners of war (POW) of the Japanese. He was one of over 2000 Allied prisoners of war held in the Sandakan POW camp in north Borneo, having been transferred there from Singapore as a part of B Force. The 1494 POWs that made up B Force, were transported from Changi on 7 July 1942 on board the tramp ship Ubi Maru, arriving in Sandakan Harbour on 18 July 1942. Cpl Clark died on 15 April 1945, aged 39 .
