Pre-enlistment studio portrait of 1141 Private (Pte) William Leslie Stuart Mill, 28th Battalion, of Perth, WA. A saw maker and repairer prior to enlisting in May 1915, Pte Mill embarked from Fremantle on board HMAT Ascanius (A11) on 29 June 1915. He arrived at Gallipoli in October 1915 and remained until the evacuation in December. Pte Mill and the 28th Battalion were stationed in Egypt until March 1916 when they were sent to France for service on the Western Front. Pte Mill was killed in action on 29 July 1916 at Pozieres, France, during an attack on German trenches. He was 23 years of age.
