Description
The Vickers Vimy twin engine bomber, serial number GEAOU, that won the England to Australia air race of 1919 is mobbed by enthusiastic wellwishers as it comes to a stop at Fanny Bay airfield, Darwin. Flown by Captain Ross Macpherson Smith, co-piloted by his brother Lieutenant Keith Macpherson Smith, and assisted by air mechanics Sergeant (Sgt) W H (Wally) Shiers and Sgt J M (Jim) Bennett, the aircraft departed London on 12 November 1919 and landed at Darwin on 10 December 1919.
