Studio portrait of 404622 Flight Sergeant (Flt Sgt) Henry William Joseph Smith, air gunner, 50 Squadron, RAF, of Murwillumbah, NSW. A salesman prior to enlisting in October 1940, he trained in Canada and England under the Empire Air Training Scheme. He was subsequently promoted to Pilot Officer, and, on 6 November 1942, was awarded the Distinguished Flying Medal (DFM). PO Smith and five other crew members of Lancaster bomber W4382 left RAF Base Skellingthorpe, Lincolnshire, on a mission to Soltau, Germany on 17 December 1942. W4382 was lost en route; no trace of it, or its crew, was found. PO Henry W J Smith (DFM) was 25 years of age.
