Studio portrait of NX73747 Private (Pte) Herbert Edward Sheard, 2/12 Field Ambulance, of Campsie, NSW, who enlisted in December 1941. He was one of 332 persons who died on 14 May 1943 when the 2/3rd Australian Hospital Ship, Centaur, was attacked and sunk by a Japanese submarine 50 miles north-east of Brisbane. Pte Sheard was 26 years of age.
