Studio portrait of 5068 Private John Cook Smith, 27th Battalion, of Semaphore, SA. A labourer prior to enlisting in March 1916, he embarked from Adelaide with the 13th Reinforcements on HMAT Bulla (A45) on 24 June 1916. He arrived in France for service on the Western Front on 7 November 1916. Pte Smith was wounded in action by a gun shot wound to the shoulder in Belgium on 4 October 1917. He returned to his unit in France on 1 January 1918 and was killed in action near Morlancourt, France, on 7 June 1918. Pte Smith was 28 years of age.
