Studio portrait of Private 5687 William Joseph O'Brien, 25th Battalion, of Toowoomba, Qld. Prior to enlisting in June 1916, he worked as a milling engineer at the Defiance Flour Mill in Toowoomba. Pte O'Brien embarked from Brisbane on board HMAT Clan MacGillivray (A46) with the 15th Reinforcements on 7 September 1916. They arrived in England in November 1916 and joined up with the 25th Battalion in France on 16 December 1916, spending the winter in the trenches of the Somme Valley. Pte O'Brien was wounded in action at Bullecourt, France, when a bomb dump exploded. He died the next day, 23 April 1917, at a dressing station in nearby Vaulx-Vraucourt. Pte O'Brien was 20 years of age.
