Informal portrait of 7303 Private (Pte) William Henry Lucas, 12th Battalion, of Lower Wilmot, Tas. A farmer prior to enlisting in November 1916, Pte Lucas embarked from Adelaide with the 24th Reinforcements on board HMAT Seang Bee (A48) on 10 February 1917. Pte Lucas was to suffer several months of illness during his service and was admitted to the ship's hospital just four days out to sea. Upon reaching England on 2 May 1917, he was admitted to Parkhouse Hospital, Durrington, suffering from mumps. He was discharged in August 1917 and after further training in England, proceeded to Belgium in November to join his unit. In February 1918 he was hospitalised again and was diagnosed with trench fever in March. He rejoined his unit on 28 April 1918. Pte Lucas was wounded in action, probably near Villers-Bretonneux, France, by gun shot wounds to the abdomen and left hand, on 1 May 1918. He died of his wounds on 2 May 1918. Pte Lucas was 33 years of age.
