Studio portrait of 1155 Corporal (Cpl) Harry Mason Belwood, 1st Light Horse, of Darlinghurst, NSW; formerly of Scarborough, England. Cpl Belwood had prior service in the 2nd Battalion, NSW Mounted Rifles during the South African War of 1899-1902, and, as 196 Private (Pte) Harry Mason Belwood, with the Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force (Tropical Unit) in Rabaul, New Guinea during 1914. He stated his occupation as "horse driver" when he enlisted in the 1st light Horse on 27 April 1915 and embarked from Sydney with the 8th Reinforcements on board HMAT Runic (A54) on 9 August 1915. He arrived at Gallipoli on 25 October 1915 and was promoted to temporary Sergeant (Sgt) the next day. Sgt Belwood remained until the evacuation of Gallipoli in December 1915. Upon arrival in Egypt he reverted to the rank of Corporal, but in March 1916 he was court martialled for drunkenness and demoted to the rank of Private. In May Pte Belwood was transferred to the artillery and embarked for France where he was transferred to the 6th Field Artillery on 3 January 1917. However, on 12 January 1917 he was hospitalised with a carbuncle on his neck. Gunner Belwood died at the 5th General Hospital in Rouen, France, on 21 January 1917. He was 41 years of age.
