Studio portrait of NX39905 Private (Pte) Albert Charles "Charlie" Moore, 2/31 Battalion, of West Pennant Hills. He worked as a labourer prior to enlisting on 26 July 1941. Pte Moore trained in Sydney and Tamworth with 5 Training Battalion and was then transferred to 2/18 Battalion. On 26 January 1942 Pte Moore and his unit arrived in Singapore. A few weeks later, on 15 February 1942, Singapore fell to the Japanese. 130,000 Allied troops, 15,000 being Australians, became prisoners of war. Pte Moore was initially held at Changi prison camp in Singapore and then in Sandakan, North Borneo. He died at Sandakan on 10 April 1945. He was 43 years of age. Pte Moore was the son of Albert Edward and Lillian Martha Moore, and the husband of Gladys Irene Moore, of Aikens Road, West Pennant Hills, NSW.
