Studio portrait of 407030 Aircraftman (AC), later Sergeant (Sgt), Ronald McGregor Herman, 37 Squadron, RAF, of Kilkenny, SA. He was a clerk at the Perry Engineering Company, Adelaide, prior to enlisting on 29 April 1940. AC Herman trained in Australia as a wireless operator/air gunner (WAG). He was promoted to the rank of Sergeant on 17 December 1940 and left Australia for service in the Middle East during February 1941and was posted to 37 Squadron, RAF, on 3 May 1941. Sgt Herman was a crew member of Wellington bomber LCZ9038, when his aircraft collided with another Wellington (ICDV483) on the flight path over Luqa, Malta, on the night of 8/9 March 1942. Sgt Herman was 22 years of age. Sgt Herman's brother, 407713 Sgt James Alexander Herman, 32 Squadron, RAAF, was also a WAG. He lost his life in a mid-air collision, over Giru, Qld, Aged 28.
