Description

Studio portrait of NX31930 Lance Corporal (L/Cpl) Norman William Tumeth, 2/2 Battalion, of Tamworth, NSW. L/Cpl Tumeth enlisted on 11 June 1941. He was later promoted to Corporal (Cpl) and transferred to 8 Division Provost Company. He was taken prisoner with the 2/18 Battalion following the fall of Singapore on 15 February 1942 and interned as a prisoner of war in Thailand. Cpl Tumeth was being transported to Japan on board the Rakuyo Maru when the ship was attacked and sunk by the submarine USS Sea Lion on 12 September 1944. Cpl Tumeth and over 1100 other prisoners died. Cpl Tumeth was 35 years of age.
